AmarokLiveCD Bundled with FREE Music

Amarok Live

AmarokLive has just released a fully functional, but striped down Linux LiveCD that is bundled with FREE music, web browser, irc client, and many other common tools. It mainly features the incredible KDE based Amarok audio player. It contains a very diverse selection of tracks, ranging for classical to electronic-house type beats. I think it has something for everyone, and of course you can re-master the CD to put all of your own music on it for use at a party for instance, and i imagine, but have not confirmed you could use a DVD for this process as well. I put this cd in, it booted to a fully functional KDE desktop with amarok already open ready to play the provided playlist as well as a konquror session with help and additional info about the cd and the music.

The music comes from a recording label called Magnatune, which states that half of every sale they make goes to the artist. They also support a very radical(for the music industry) business model of being very open with the rights to their artist’s music. Allowing for ‘fair use’, remixing, and best of all, NO DRM. The also print their CDs On-Demand, as well as having an online store.

This is a record label taking a step in the right direction, and i think we all need to should show our support for this label. If for nothing else, so that other labels will see that a more open business model can be a successful one.

Web Essentials 2005 Conference logo

Last years first ever Web Essentials Conference was a great success and this years was no different. The Event took place on 29 & 30 of October. It featured great speakers like Eric Meyer, Dave Shea, and Douglas Bowman. Touted as conference by web developers for web developers, it included topics such as: development, user experience and accessibility, workflow, and in depth sessions on CSS, XHTML, emergent semantics, Javascript, AJAX, and much more.

Thanks largely to the huge popularity of podcasting, the Web Essentials 2005 conference is already available for download at their webiste.

SuSE Linux 10.0 Released Today

This is a very exciting day for the SuSE community, and to a lesser extent the open source community as a whole. Today marks the release of the first open source version of Novell’s Suse Linux.

If you enjoy learning new things and you are either bored with Windows or tired of spyware, then you should give OpenSuSE a shot. Those without proper backups or an open mind, need not apply. I have been using SuSE for 8 months or so now and I never looked back at Windows. I will be upgrading my systems from SuSE 9.3 to 10.0 as soon as possible(more on this later).

Merlefest Gallery Has Returned

I am in the process of updating the scripts that run my website. One of the many changes I am making is to switch from Coppermine Photo Gallery to Gallery2. The plan was to integrate the Merlefest gallery into my websites design, as I have with my other gallery. Due to some technical issues in integrating multiple galleries into my design, this is taking longer than planned. I hope to have the gallery back up soon.

*Update*
10-03-2005 11:45 pm - The new layout is now integrated and I just need to upload the picture to the new gallery script. I have decided to quit using sub-domains because of the technical issues they cause between the various scripts I am using. Consequently, I apologize to anyone who ends up on a ‘404 Error page

10-04-2005 9:45 pm - The pictures are back! However I lost the numbers on how many times each image had been viewed yet again. Total, the ‘view count’ for all the images added together would be over 45,000!
