SuSE Linux 10.1 Package Management Issues Fixed

Novell Released updated packages for SuSE Linux 10.1 today, June 9, 2006. I installed these packages via Smart and then Added a few Repositories to YaST. Previously, it could take as long as 20 minutes for the ‘Installation Source’ module to close after you had clicked ‘finish’. Now that the package management seems to be fixed, I intend to give Rug a shot, but I think im done with YaST -> Software Manager. It is just too slow. You can get the updated packages from the SuSE 10.1 Update Repository or from a mirror of it.

I think he just did buddy ;) Alternatively, you can follow his instructions for installing Smart Package Manager and let that update your system in one click. That works real well and its much zippier then Yast (for package management, yast still rocks for configuration!).

REally nice job witht the BLOG !!!!!

I really hate what the Gnome mafia is doing to Suse. They broke a perfectly good Yast code baseline in 10.0 by creating a new implementation derived from update technology from the Red Hat world. And look what happened. Also, I downloaded SLED 10 and ran it in VMware, and it was clear that Novell is putting the development effort into Gnome (they are trying to catch up to KDE’s spit and polish).

When I chose KDE and ran it, it felt like a bolted on software. I was going to plunk down the dollars to buy SLED, but based on my impression, I decided that OpenSuse would keep me in touch with KDE w/o the agendas of ex-Zimian emplyees.

If SLED 10 portends to things to come, then Novell is heading Suse into being an inadvertent clone of Red Hat :(

OBTW dane, take a chill pill you moron. The guy does not have to put time and effort hand holding rude idiots like yourself…

Excellent instructions! I had installed 10.1 and got everything to work including XGL (although XGL is a little buggy, once these are worked out it will be a great interface). The only major headache was updating. These instructions did the trick for me, many thanks.

In regards to the moron (dane), nobody owes you anything. You should be thankful people take the time to try and help you out. Call Bill Gates next time!
